Op-ed Excerpts

Every night, millions of Coloradans are anxiously losing sleep about how they are going to make their incomes stretch to the end of the month. Living paycheck to paycheck, the burdens on working and middle-class families have only multiplied during the pandemic. From ever-increasing housing costs to stagnant wages and strained public services, hard-working students, entrepreneurs, and parents are being forced to endure a chronic state of survival.

Meanwhile, there exists a sea of bloated billionaires that have not only survived the struggles of the pandemic but leached even more wealth into their personal stores – spending massive amounts on space joyrides and personal vanity projects. So in a time of such great instability and widespread need, it’s more nauseating than ever to realize just how rigged the status quo really is.

For decades billionaires have lubricated the halls of Congress with countless lobbyists, promising campaign donations in return for screwing over the American people. And in doing so, they have successfully created a system that prioritizes preserving the ultra-wealth of a select group of plutocrats at the expense of everyday families.
...
It’s time to hold billionaires accountable. It’s time to ensure that the wealth working people are creating for corporate coffers is FAIRLY recycled back into the economy – rather than hidden in offshore accounts...

We Need to Rebuild America and Billionaires Should Pay For It

His Name Was Elijah

Elijah McClain, a gentle, smiley, talented 23-year-old, was brutally killed – not by a back-alley assailant, but by a public servant, whose duty was to “protect and serve.” In his last moments, he was kind to his abusers – pleading with them, he said “you are beautiful and I love you...I just can’t breathe…”

Elijah’s heart-sickening story shocked the world and was enough to shake anyone’s faith in justice. But sadly, for most of us in the Black community, it wasn’t a surprise.

It wasn’t a surprise that a young black boy was stopped for no reason. It wasn’t a surprise that they viewed him as a threat and treated him violently due to the color of his skin. It wasn’t a surprise that the officer-involved later mocked Elijah’s memorial site with his colleagues...

The recently released investigative report regarding Elijah’s death uncovered what many of us already knew all along: "Aurora police officers did not have a legal basis to force Elijah McClain to stop walking, to frisk him or to use a chokehold on him.”

But, the report also affirmed an even darker truth: the accountability systems within the Aurora Police Department is utterly broken...

Speech Excerpt

Good Morning, it is an honor to be here, and once again, gather beneath the golden dome of our democracy.

While in many ways it is just a building, not unlike the countless others across our nation’s capitals, we are reminded of its symbolic significance and the sacrifice necessary to keep it standing.

Our forefathers once dreamt of places like this one. Trapped under the heel of totalitarian rule, they imagined a day when buildings would be erected to foster great debate of free people. They envisioned a nation where the limited circumstances of your birth would not dictate the magnitude of your destiny. And now, some 250 years later, we are reminded that the liberty we hold dear is still in need of safeguarding.

Democracy and freedom may be the foundation of our country’s inception but they are not indestructible, they are not a guarantee. It takes ALL of us, every–single–day, striving to live up to the transcendent ideals of our republic, in order to keep it. This task has been handed down through the generations - in war times and in peace, in recession and in prosperity, in devastation and in growth.

Despite struggles or ease, this body is responsible for reaching beyond the hardships of our present moment towards a future of greater opportunity...

Issue Talking Points

  • Our country is at a critical crossroads and it is up to everyone to decide where we go next, making this election potentially the most important one of our lifetime.
  • That’s why we are out here today – to activate voters, but not just any voters, Latino voters.
  • Because as one of the fastest-growing and critically important voting blocks in this county, we have the power to change the tides of history.
  • For too long Latino voters have been dismissed or ignored in national conversations, but things are shifting, as people refuse to be silenced.
  • Making up nearly 20% of the population, Latinos represent a fundamental piece of America’s fabric, and without our unique perspectives and voices, our country cannot possibly create the unified nation that so many of us dream of.
  • But hateful rhetoric is on the rise as corrupt leaders demonize minorities and reduce people to stereotypes meant to rob them of their humanity.
  • Since the election of Donald Trump racially motivated hate crimes have reached a 16-year high with anti-immigrant language and racist crime messages stoking fear.
  • We need to stand up to these deceitful attempts to divide us and refuse to believe that our neighbor is our enemy – only then can we create an America that lives up to the values we were founded on.

LAtino Caucus GOTV

  • No one should have to choose between financial stability and getting the healthcare they need. Yet sadly, far too many Coloradans are burdened with that choice – neglecting their health for the sake of their family’s security.
  • We are committed to continuing to find new and innovative solutions to our healthcare problems – from increasing competition and driving down insurance costs, to holding corporations responsible for price gouging.
  • Coloradans have demanded bold, progressive action on healthcare and we intend to deliver on that.
  • Last year, Front Range hospitals saw $2 billion in profits, and now they’re using some of that cash to run ads against legislation that could save families money.
  • We don’t represent special interests, we represent the people, and the people are crying out for relief on healthcare.
